Events home page

The home page of the Events module contains two separate content areas:

  • In the right panel is a list of Upcoming events, sorted in chronological order, from all of the categories available to the user
  • In the left panel, a list of event categories available to the user and the number of upcoming events in each category. Click on a category to filter the list of events shown in the middle to just ones in that category.

An event can be added to more than one category

The first day of the week can be adjusted in Events module settings.

Upcoming Events

The right panel shows a list of upcoming events that match the filter (category or date archive) that has been applied, in chronological order. By default, no filters are applied and all upcoming events are displayed.

Only upcoming events will be displayed. Events that have passed will no longer be displayed but can be accessed from the archives.

Here are some of the features of the upcoming events list:

  • Event title - Every event listed includes its title, which, when clicked, takes you to the full event details page
  • Event date/time and location - Every event listed includes the date and time of the event and, if included, the location of the event
  • Occurrence - If this is a repeating event information about the occurrence will be displayed
  • Event details - Every event listed includes the description of the full event. If the description is quite lengthy, the full description will not be displayed here
  • Comments - As long as commenting has been enabled for the Events module, for each event listed, the number of comments will be shown. (the creator of an event can turn off commenting for a particular event.) The number of comments is a link to the full event, which will be scrolled down to the comments section

More actions menu - For every event, the actions menu is available:

You can Edit, Copy, Share and Delete events.

The main content areas have an RSS feed icon that allows you to view that content in an RSS reader:

The RSS feed provides the summary information shown in the content area and does not display the underlying content.

All Collaborate RSS feeds require authentication (the user's email address and Collaborate password), unless authentication has been turned off by the site administrator.

The iCal icon at the top of the page allows you to subscribe to the selected events in the Events module using the standard iCalendar feed format:

Click on the link and open the calendar in their calendar program (typically Outlook).

As a security precaution, the iCal icon will not appear if the site is password protected or requires each user to accept the site terms & conditions every time the user accesses the site.

In addition to those features, and assuming you have the permissions, you will be able to create a new Event by clicking Add:

The Add event screen will be displayed:

If the list of events shown on this page is filtered by a category, then the new event form will have that category pre-selected.

The Events module employs infinite scrolling, so scroll down the page and more upcoming events will be shown. There is no limit to the number of events on a single page.

iCal Syncing

To sync the Events calendar with third-party calendar applications, click Subscribe to iCalendar feed:

You must give permission to open the calendar:

Click Allow to continue.

You will then receive a prompt from the third party application you are using. For example, the mac Calendar app:

Click Subscribe. The app will then ask for more information:

Click OK to confirm. The calendar feed will now be synced with your calendar.

The Calendar will indicate the time zone for calendar events. When the calendar is brought into a third party calendar, they will automatically convert the time of those events to their local time.

Categories

On the top left of the page is a list of all of the event categories. By default, the Events module displays events from All categories:

Each category shows the number of upcoming events in that category that you can access.

Because events can be permissioned, not every user with access to the Events module will be able to view every event.

Additionally, a My drafts category will appear if you have created any draft events:

You also have access to your drafts and favourites. Drafts are discussed in greater detail here.

If you click on a category, only events in that category are shown in the right panel. The selected event category will be highlighted on the left:

Events Navigation on a Smartphone

To access the Events module, from the drop-down, tap Events:

To filter events by category or past months, click Browse:

To display the Browse screen:

Select which category or month you want to filter by.
